'Good mower and easy to use'

I was surprised to see a 1 star review for the Allen XR44 Hover mower - very harsh. As last year was very wet I only used my John Deere x304 for the main lawns and used a strimmer for the difficult to access areas, the cottage garden area and the slope to the streams. So today I got the XR44 out for the first time in over 12 months. One pull of the starter cord and it sprang to life. Warmed it up, changed the oil (10 minute job) and cut the grass with no problems.I will comment on the points… Read Full Review

My Hayter Allen XR44 Petrol Hovertrim has been a very disappointing purchase, having owned Flymo petrol hover mowers for over 30 years I decided this time I would try a different maker as in my experience Flymo have always been dodgy starters with their 2 stroke engines, Hayter have been around for many years so maybe time to give the XR44 a go.
My first impression before using the machine looked very good with the renowned Honda 4 stroke engine and the nylon cutter blades. After using the XR44… Read Full Review

Comparing a nylon line grass trimmer to an older, metal bladed Flymo L400 is naturally going to produce different results in terms of performance and quality of cut. Hayter/Allen would themselves agree that if current regulations allowed their Hover trim to be sold with a metal blade they would fit one- regretfully EEC regulations inhibit the fitting of a metal blade ( I won't bore you with the technicalities) hence the reason the machine is marketed as a Lawn Trimmer ( nylon line) rather than a Lawn Mower (metal blade)
It's interesting to note that when Flymo had to stop producing the metal bladed L400 due to the same regs then also introduced a similar machine also using nylon line cutters. but was such a poor seller it was dropped after a short period.
If you want a similar quality of cut that you have been used to with your metal bladed Flymo, then Allen and Flymo still make them, but the smallest cut is a 20'. which use a larger 4-stroke Honda engine.
Incidentally the engine fitted to your L400 was made by a company called Tecumseh and were an inherently poor quality engine- as were most of their products- and now the company does not exist.

Everything the guy above has said is true. My XR44 lasted 11 months before 3 engine bolts broke, snapped off in the bottom of the crankcase so you have to buy a new crankcase bottom, new bolts and a new plastic mounting base. I'm sure that the little Honda engine is designed to be mounted using 6 bolts not 4 as Haytor have done as there are six threaded screw holes available in the case. I can't understand why they haven't used all six, there is no way 4 tiny bolts will cope with the power and vibration.
I should have been able to get it repaired under warrenty but my dealer ATS Machinery in Lower Beeding, Horsham, West Sussex have refused to honour the warrenty because they say they will get no money from Hayter (even though its there reponsability) So I have had to do the work myself and pay for the parts. I would not advise anyone to buy this machine because every 50 hours or so you will need to fix the bolts. Haytor know this is a fault design yet are selling this machine, as long as it lasts a year which for most people it will they don't care. It says in the manual trouble shooting section, excessive vibration, rememdy tighten engine mounting bolts. Why should they come loose? Never happened on any other machine i have owned or used. I alway knew Hayter they sell over priced rubbish, a very big mistake buying an Allen Hayter XR44.
